Abstract

The present study is concerned with the analysis of selected poems by the English poet Philip Larkin (1922-1985). This analysis covers the aspects of semantic and syntactic patterns. What attracts the researcher’s attention is the recurring theme of disappointment, isolation and death that the poet tackles continuously using a traditional systematic structure. Larkin is an excellent example of the plain style in modern times. The aim of this study is to analyze selected poems of Philip Larkin semantically and syntactically and to convey the intended message by the poet to the reader making him explore the prominent features that give the selected poems their identity. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first one presents some definitions, theories and a short history of semantics as well as it presents some definitions and theories of syntax. The second chapter is structured in two parts; theoretical and analytical. The theoretical starts with questions about the nature of meaning in everyday language and poetry. The analytical part of the chapter is an analysis of selected poems, namely ’Wants’, ’The Trees’, ’Ambulances’ and ’Next, Please’. The third chapter is also structured in two parts; theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part gives some linguists’ opinions of the text and theory of poetic syntax. The analytical part of this chapter is an analysis of the poems, namely ’Talking in Bed’, ’Going’ and ’Wants’.
