Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is worldwide problem affecting all age groups and one of the most common chronic diseases affecting the older adult population , consumption of drugs in this age group is common because of the fact that most of the chronic diseases rises steadily with age resulting in more medication use . Non adherence with medical regimen is also so common among elderly people. That it should be the first matter to check when drug therapy appears to be ineffective. Increasing the effectiveness of adherence interventions might have a far greater impact on the health of the population than any improvement in specific medical treatments. Patient education is an important strategy in improving adherence and can be seen as the foundation of most patient-focused intervention .Gerontological nurses can play an important role in optimizing drug therapy, teaching about name, dose, time, and purpose, methods of taking and possible side effects. The physical status of the patients should be assessed to determine their ability for self drug administration, the nurses should review all prescribed and non prescribed medications that can interact together, and note the patient responses to them. The gerontological nurse is a key person in ensuring that the medication use is appropriate , effective , and as safe as possible.
The aim of the study was: to assess the extent of the adherence with medications for diabetes mellitus and the associated factors among older adult patients.
Research tools and method:
The study was carried out in five units in the main university hospital in Alexandria .Namely the cardiovascular unit, the geriatric unit, the metabolism and diabetes unit, the nephrology unit and the gastrointestinal unit. The studied subjects who fulfilled the following criteria : diagnosed as diabetic patient, age 60 years old and above, male or female, able to communicate effectively ,accept to participate in the study ,have no cognitive impairment (score 24-30 on the MMSE scale), responsible for self-administration of drugs for at least one year , and available during the time of data collection .The total number assigned was one hundred and fifty older adult patients.
