Abstract

This study was carried out at the Experimental Station and Laboratory of Vegetable & Floriculture, Fac. of Agriculture, Mansoura University during the two successive seasons of 2011/2012 and 2012 / 2013 to study the effect of different NPK rates (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 g /Plant), GA3 at 100 ppm and yeast at 5 g / l either alone or in combination on subsequent seedling growth and chemical constituents of Magnolia grandiflora L. The results could be summarized as follows : Monthly spray with GA3 at 100 ppm, active bread yeast at 5 g / l, or commercial Hyper Feed NPK (19 :19: 19) fertilizer alone improved all growth parameters of magnolia transplants and increased their leaves contents of N, P, K, carbohydrates, and chlorophyll. Data showed that, for individual compounds, GA3 was the most effective to producing the best growth parameters and highest contents of N, P, K, carbohydrates, and chlorophyll, followed by active yeast, while fertilization was the least effective. Among fertilizer treatments, the medium fertilizer level 3g/pot was optimum for growth of magnolia seedlings. GA3 spray was most effective to improving all growth parameters of magnolia seedlings, followed by yeast spray, while fertilization was the third in order. The best treatment for all vegetative and root growth parameters and chemical constituents were achieved using monthly fertilization with Hyper feed NPK(19:19:19) fertilizer at 3 g/pot and foliar spray with both GA3 at 100 ppm and active bread yeast at 5 g/l. It could be concluded that, in order to achieve fast and good growth for magnolia seedlings, they should be fertilized monthly with Hyper feed NPK (19:19:19) fertilizer at 3 g/pot and foliar spray with both GA3 at 100 ppm and active bread yeast at 5 g/l.
