Abstract
Through her work which spanned more than half a century, the English novelist, Doris Lessing (1919- 2013), conveyed and revealed problems in the world she lived in, and also she presented a great hope for humanity. As she witnessed crises in the world and was aware of the disastrous violence, Lessing wrote a series of autobiographical novels that reflected the bitter reality. As a result of her keen and obvious insight into the time she lived in was one of the major facts that she received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007. The aim of this thesis is to show some social aspects in three novels by Doris Lessing. She illustrates the rigidity of society in her novels; The Grass is Singing, The Golden Notebook, and The Fifth Child. The thesis consists of three chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The introduction tackles the biography of the English author Doris Lessing. Chapter one has the title ”Self, Family, and Society” in Lessing’s first novel The Grass is Singing that deals with the influence of environment, heredity and instinct on human being. Chapter two bears the title ”The Image of Woman” in The Golden Notebook which analyzes the social oppression that woman faces under the patriarchal system. Chapter three entitled ”The Complexity of Social Relations of the Patriarchal Systems” in The Fifth Child which shows the oppression of social institutions exerted by a group of people. The thesis ends with a conclusion that sums up the findings of the study.
