Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to shed light on four aspects of racism in selected plays by Suzan-Lori Parks. Besides, it explores the impact of racism on Blacks’ life and experience, and the factors that led them to these effects. This thesis consists of four chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The introduction examines the definition of race and racism, and discusses Henry Louis Gates’ theories on Race, Signification and Structuralism. Besides, it explores a biography of Suzan-Lori Parks, her theatre, influences and her technique of Repetition and Revision. Chapter one discusses the fabricated absence of History in The Death of the Last Black Man in The Whole Entire World (1990(. Chapter two examines the repression of African American identity in Topdog/Underdog (2001). Chapter three explores the awakening of African American consciousness through Lincoln myth in The America Play (1993). Chapter four shows the representation of cultural orphans in Venus (1996). The Conclusion presents an evaluation of the main points that have been clarified in the thesis.
