Abstract The term hallux valgus denotes deviation of the great toe toward the fibular border of the foot. Hallux valgus is associated with prominence of the head of the first metatarsal, the so called bunion, which is derived from the English root ”bunny” or term bunion is derived from the Latin word bunio, meaning turnip or the French “buigne” and means an area of bony swelling. Hallux valgus term was introduced by Carl Hueter (1) to define a static subluxation of the first MTP joint characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe and medial deviation of the first metatarsal. It is now recognized, particularly in juvenile patients, that a hallux valgus deformity can originate due to lateral deviation of the articular surface of the metatarsal head without subluxation of the first MTP joint (2,4) .Fig (1) Hallux valgus is a common foot disorder of several causes and can lead to significant foot pain and deformity. The word bunion also has been used to demonstrate any enlargement or deformity of the M T P joint, including such diverse diagnoses as an enlarged bursa, overlying ganglion, gouty arthropathy, and hallux valgus, as well as proliferative osseous changes that can develop secondary to MTP joint arthritis.
