Abstract

An i mal Prod uct ion Depa rtment, Facu lty of Agr i cu l tu re, Assi ut Un i versi ty.
The object ive of the present study was to invest igate the effect of feed i ng level and
progest\:rone injection on reprod uctive performance, bl ood consti tuents, body and birth
weight, physiologi cal parameters, sk i n thickness and udder vol ume.
In th i s experiment, fifty Saidi ewes of about 4-6 years allotted to 2 groups (2 feed ing groups),
a control group fed I 00% maintena nce (M) and a treated group fed 200% maintenance (2M). Each
group was sub divided to two subgroups, injected or non injected with progesterone hormone. M and
2M diets were given to ewes from mating ti ll 1 1 days of mati ng and then both groups were fed
accord ing to the feed ing system i n the farm after day 1 1 of mat ing to the end of the exper
imen t. Inject ion with progesterone was given in day 1 1 of mating. Reprod uctive performance was
recorded. Blood samples were taken before mating, mati ng, day 1 1 of mating, day 16 of
mating and day 21 of mating for
determination of glucose, progesterone, T3 and T4 . Physi ological pa rameters, skin
thickness and udder vol ume were measured at mati ng, day 30, 60, 90 and 120 of mat ing, before
parturi t ion and at the day of
pa rtur it ion.
The results obtai ned are summa rized i n the follow i ng.
Reproductive pe1 forma11ce,
1- Ewes fed 200% mai ntenance had h igher conception and lambi ng rates tha n th ose fed 100% ma i
ntenance (M) either injected or non injected.
2- Ewes fed on 2M d i et had h igher tota l l ambs than those fed M d iet ei ther injected
or non injected.
Bor I’ and birth weights
1 - Ewes fed on 2M d iet had h igher body and bi rth wei ghts than those fed on M one.
2- Ewes injected with progesterone had lower body wei ght and h igher bi rth wei ght than those
non injected.
3- Ewes given 2M and progesterone inject ion had higher bi rth wei ghts than those of other
treatments, whereas ewes given 2M and non injected had h igher body wei ght from mating t i ll day
120 after mati ng compared with other treatments.
Physiologica l pa ram eters
A- Rectal temperature
I - Ewes fed on 2M diet had higher rectal temperature than those fed on M from day 60 after mat ing
t i ll before partu rition.
2- Ewes injected with progesterone had higher rectal temperatu re (P<0.05) at mating and (P<O.O
I ) at day 30 ti ll before pa1iuri tion than those non injP.cted.
3- Ewes fed on 2M diet and injected w ith progesterone had h igher rectal temperatu re than those
of other groups at day 30 after mat ing ti ll after part u rition.
B- Respiration rate
I -Feed ing level had no signi ficant effect on respi rati on rate.
2-progesterone inject ion had no significant effect on respi rat ion rate, with exception of that
before and after partu ri ti on wh ich were higher i n injected ewes than non injected ones.
Blood constituen ts
A- Glucose
I - Ewes fed on 2M d i et had higher serum glucose concen t rat ion than those fed on M d i et at
day ·1 1 , 16 and 2 1 after mat ing.
2- Ewes injec ted w i th progesterone had h igher glucose concen trat ion tha n those of non i
njected ewes at clays 1 1 and 16 a fter mat ing.
-
3- Ewes feel on 2 M d i et and non injected wi t h progesterone had h igher
(P<0.05 ) glucose concentra tion compared w i th other trea tmen ts before and at ma t ing.
B- T3 and T4 concentrations
1 - Ewes feel on 2M d iet had higher serum T3 and T4 concentrati on than those fed on M one.
2- Ewes injected with progesterone had higher serum T3 before mating t i ll day 2 1
after mat ing whereas serum T4 concentrations were slightly h igher in the injected ewes than
that of non injected ones at days 1 1, 16 and 2 1 after mat ing.
3- Ewes fed on 2M d i et and non injected with progesterone hormone had h igher T3 and T4 before
and at mat ing whereas ewes fed on 2M and injected had h igher T3 and T4 concentrat ions at days 1
1, 16 and 21 after mat ing compa red with other treatments.
C- Progesterone conce11tratio11
I - Ewes fed on M d iet had h igher (P<O.O 1) serum progesterone concentrat ion at day 1 1 and
lower (P<O.O I ) at day 16 after mating compared with those fed on 2M one.
2- Ewes injected with progesterone had higher (P<O.O I ) serum progesterone concentrat i on than
that of non injected ewes at days 16 and 2 1 after mat ing.
3- Ewes injected wi t h progesterone of group 2 M had h igher serum progesterone concen trati on
compared wi th other treatments at days 16 and 21 after ma t ing.
Udder volume
I - Overa l l mea n of udder vol ume i n ewes fed on 2M d iets i ncreased non sign i ficant l y
compa red wi th ewes fed on M d i et.
2- Overa ll mea n of ud der vol ume i n ewes i njected wi t h progesterone h ormone i
ncreased sign i ficantly (P<O.O I ) compared w ith non injected ewes.
3- Overa l l mean of udder vol ume i n ewes fed on 2M d i ets and injected wi th progesterone
increased sign i ficantly (P<0.05) compared with other treatmen ts.
Skin thickness
1 - Overa ll mea n of skin thickness i n ewes fed on 2M diets i ncreased significantly (P<0.05)
compared with ewes fed on l’vl d i et.
2- Overall mean of skin th ickness i n ewes injected with progesterone hormone increased
significantl y (P<0.05) compared with non injected ewes.
3- Overal l mean of skin thickness in ewes fed on 2M diets and injected w ith progesterone
increased significantly (P<0.05) compared with other treatments.
