Abstract

This thesis aims at analyzing Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper from a directive speech act perspective. This thesis sheds light on the importance of directive speech acts from the author’s perspective and the characters of the novel. It should be mentioned that there is a great potential role in the application of this theory on Mark Twain’s novel. Speech act theory analyzes verbal speech and its application on The Prince and the Pauper as evidence that there are different types of speech acts in the novel. The thesis is made up of four chapters. Chapter One contains the theoretical framework of the study. Chapter Two deals with speech act theory according to Austin and Searle. This chapter explains the theory and its application to the novel under consideration. Chapter three contains the data analysis of the novel. The directive speech acts theory is applied to selected examples from the corpus. Chapter four deals with Twain’s thematic issues in The Prince and the Pauper from a pragmatic perspective. The thesis ends with a conclusion and summary of the findings as well as the recommendations for further study.
