Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to discuss and analyze the Self-lamentation autobiographies during the Ptolemaic Period. Self-lamentation texts had a variety of topics, they can be divided into categories based on the genre of the owners of these lamentations with this way the categories will be:
1- Children Self-lamentations, which expressed the feelings of sadness, pain, and tragedy of the premature death, those kids died before the appointed time, and very young to face the underworld.
2- Women Self-lamentations, which dealt with the early death of the young women, like Taimhotep who died at age 30 while her son whom she waited long still infant.
3- Men Self-lamentation, which discussed the missing supply of having children whom will insure the good burial. For example, Padi-Sobek who lamented his childlessness, which has deprived him of all the services and comforts that normally related to death and burial.
Self-lamentations over early death were similar to the Greek epitaphs, but a Greek influence in the Egyptian autobiographies would be incorrect because these thoughts have never been alien to the ancient Egyptians, they were always available in the usual funerary and literary contexts.
The premature death led to skepticism about the continuance in the memory of the community and the reason of these Self-lamentation texts was the historical events, which affected the self-presentation of the individuals deeply; stable and strong periods led to optimism with a theme of pride while intermediate and late periods led to pessimistic view with a sense of loss.
