Abstract

The following chapter presents a summary of the study problem and
its background, along with the research questions and the procedures
followed to tackle them. The chapter then provides general conclusions,
recommendation and proposes suggestions for further research.
Summary
Oral communication skills are the tools we use to understand others
and let them know what we think, feel, need and want. Oral
communication is an essential part in language learning and an important
link in the process of students’ learning and thinking development. It
provides a foundation for development of other language learning skills.
Oral communication includes many skills, the most important of which
are listening and speaking. Listening assumes increased importance as it
is not only a key language and communication skill, but it also provides a
channel through which new language is received. Listening provides the
aural input that enables learners to interact in spoken communication.
Listening is essential not only as a receptive skill but also to the
development of spoken language proficiency. Speaking, on the other
hand, is essential for language learning as it enables people to
communicate with each other, exchange information and understand the
world. Oral communication is one of the important means of learning and
acquiring knowledge. Throughout life, oral communication skills remain
essential for communicating ideas.
In spite of the increasing importance of oral communication skills in
language learning, Technical Colleges’ students lack these skills. They are
unable to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively. They have an
obvious lack of proficiency in using English to communicate orally.
Based on the result of the pilot study and the discussions that the
researcher held with the 1st year students in Industrial technical Institute,
Mataria Technical college, as well as teaching experiences with them, a
need for the current study was felt and a multimedia – based program was
developed and implemented by the researcher to serve the purpose of
enhancing students’ oral communication skills (listening and speaking).
As a result, this study aimed at investigating the effect of a
multimedia – based program on enhancing students’ oral communication
skill in technical colleges. Thirty students enrolled in the 1st year, Mataria
Industrial Technical Institute, Mataria Technical College, participated in
the study which was conducted in the academic year 2015 – 2016. The
instruments of the study included listening and speaking skills list, pre /
post test, speaking rubric and the students’ course book.

Findings of the study
Using multimedia proved to be effective in developing students’
listening and speaking skills. This was proved by analyzing the results of
the pre and post – listening and speaking test through using T. test and
calculating the effect size. In other words, it can be said that the
communication skills were developed due to using the multimedia –
based program.
The four research questions were answered end five research
hypotheses were verified through the statistical analysis of the result. So,
the findings of the research concluded that using multimedia is very
effective in developing the first year students’ listening and speaking
skills in Mataria Industrial Technical Institute, Mataria Technical
College.
The findings of the study can be summarized as follows:
 The multimedia – based program was effective in developing the
participants’ speaking skills as a whole.
 The multimedia – based program proved to be effective in
developing each single speaking skill.
 The program was also effective in enhancing the participants’
listening skill as a whole.
 The program was also effective in developing each single listening
skill.
In the light of the foregoing findings, it can be concluded that the
proposed program proved effective and the five research hypotheses have
been verified.
