Abstract

Summary
Barrier methods are a local contraceptive methods
used for prevention of pregnancy by acting as a barrier
preventing sperm from entering the uterus and the only one
recommended for prevention of sexual transmitted
diseases. These methods divided into male and female
methods ,the male condom is the only male barrier known,
while a number of different female barriers exist such as
female condom ,diaphragm, and cervical cap in addition
spermicide which used with other barrier methods for
enhancing their effectiveness (Glasier, 2015).
The effectiveness of these methods depends on their
consistent and correct use. Although these methods are
available, most physicians are overlooked and not
prescribed due to lack of awareness about it’s importance
and the right technique of using so that people may fail to
use it, or change to other methods (Peipert, 2009).
The present study aimed to assess couples perception
toward utilization of barrier contraceptive methods. To
achieve the study objective, a descriptive study had been
conducted in two setting (Faculty of Nursing and Technical
Nursing Institute at Ain Shams University).

A purposive sample technique was used and this
technique followed for daily data collection until its
completion. 102 couples were included in the study which
started from beginning of July 2015 till the beginning of
October 2015. It has been done through Self-administered
questionnaire sheet to assess couples’ perception toward
utilization of barrier contraceptive methods
The present study revealed that:
 About 32.4%, 30.3% of wives and husbands their age
more than 35 years old respectively. In addition 73.5 %
of them live at urban area.
 34.3% of them their martial duration more than 9 years,
in addition 52 %, 64.7% of wives and husbands have
higher educational level respectively.
 The study illustrated that 22.5% from wives knowing
barrier methods while for husbands 45.1% knowing it.
 Adding to 43.2 % and 51% from husbands and wives
have satisfactory level of knowledge regarding barrier
methods.
 there was a statistical significant difference between
wives’ knowledge regarding barrier method and their
educational level while for husbands there is no
statistical significant difference between husbands

 In relation to couples utilization of barrier contraceptive
methods 3.9% of wives used spermicide and 13.7% of
husbands used condom.
 In addition to 54.2% of wives using spermicide
incorrectly and 58.3% of husbands using male condom
incorrectly
 The most common Causes for couples not used barrier
methods as difficult in applying the method for wives
that represents 23.5%. While for husbands are
ineffective method that represents 29.5%.
 The study indicates that there was a highly statistical
significant difference between husband’s knowledge
regarding barrier method and their utilization.
 Concerning couples attitude 55.9% of wives had
positive attitude regarding barrier method. While for
husbands 66.7% of them had uncertain attitude
regarding it.
 There was a highly statistical significant difference
between couple’s attitude regarding barrier methods
their knowledge and their place of residence.

 Based on findings of the current study, it concluded
that:
Despite couples know about barrier methods and had
positive attitude, their utilization was low and improper.
This returned to lack of awareness about its importance
and the right technique of using.
 Based on these findings of the present study the
researcher recommended; Awareness brochure for
couples about barrier methods and its importance at
family planning clinics.
 Further research is needed to be applied on large sample
at different geographic area.
 Development guidelines to enhance sexual satisfaction
among couples used barrier method
