Abstract

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is the formulation of nutritional components for intravenous delivery. It composed of carbohydrates, amino acids, fats, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, water and other additives. TPN is prescribed to children with a nonfunctional gut or to those who fail to meet their nutritional requirements enterally. Nurses play an important role in TPN preparation, administration and monitoring. Aim: This study aimed to assess nurses` knowledge and practices about total parenteral nutrition for children. Setting: The study was conducted at surgical, medical, and neonatal intensive care units of Mansoura University children hospital. Subjects: A convenient sample of 77 nurses working at the previous mentioned setting. Tools of the study: A structured interview questionnaire for nurses` knowledge and observational checklists for their practices was developed by researcher to collect data. Results: It indicated that (53.2%) of the studied nurses had average knowledge, and about (80.5%) of the studied nurses had satisfactory performance level. A statistical significant relation was founded between nurses` knowledge and their gender and previous training on TPN (P=0.050 & P=0.020) with no statistical significant relation between nurses` performance and their socio-demographic criteria. Conclusion: It indicated that more than half of the studied nurses had average knowledge and the minority had good knowledge about TPN. The majority of the studied nurses had satisfactory performance level. Recommendation: Therefore, educational programs are essential for pediatric nurses about total parenteral nutrition. In addition to this, nutrition support team should be available in all hospital units using TPN for children and consulted when artificial nutrition is considered.
