Abstract

Regional anaesthesia has recently become the preferred option for elective caesarean section. Epidural anaesthesia is quite safe and effective method that also allows anaesthesia time prolongation, effective postoperative analgesia and better neonatal Apgar scores and acid-base status. Magnesium (Mg) is one of the newly studied neuraxial adjuvants. Multiple clinical trials have been done to evaluate the analgesic properties of epidural Mg. Due to the analgesic and the relaxant properties of Mg we proposed its beneficial effects as an anaesthetic not only an analgesic adjuvant. In this study, we evaluated the effect of adding Mg sulphate to epidural bupivacaine for caesarean section as regard the quality of anaesthesia. Our study found that Epidural Mg seems to improve the quality of epidural anaesthesia through increasing both sensory and motor blockade without increasing the adverse effects.
