Abstract

Background: Behçet’s disease is multisystemic vusculitis of unknown etiology and unique geographic distribution . The disease course characterized by exacerbation and remissions. Recurrent skin mucosa lesions and sight threatening panuveitis are the hallmark of the disease. Males are more affected than females. Pathogenesis of thrombosis in Behçet’s disease is still not well established. However, multiple factors leading to the disease may include hypercoagulability and hypofibrinolysis, it seems that vascular endothelial lesion is the major factor
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the pattern of thrombosis in Egyptian Behçet patients .
Methods: A retrospective study among 60 patients with Behçet’s disease was performed.
Results: All patients had oral and genital aphthae, uveitis and vascular thrombosis . 31 of 60 patients had cutaneous lesions consistent with Behçet’s disease while 37 of 60 patients had pathergy test positive. There was significant correlation between development of different vascular manifestations and the results of both ESR and CRP with P- value 0.032 and 0.003 respectively. There was significant correlation between development of different vascular manifestation and the age , the duration of illness and the inflammatory markers(ESR and CRP). There was significant correlation between development of lower extremity venous thrombosis and the presence of erythema nodosum like lesion and positive pathergy test.
Conclusion: We concluded that Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the most frequent vascular manifestation among Egyptian patients with Behçet’s disease. DVT can take place in any localization in the venous system, but most commonly in deep veins of the legs and may be the first vascular event in the majority of patients.
