Abstract

Background: Self-management techniques of rheumatoid arthritis patients are designed to minimize the potential long-term disabilities, these patients are liable to decreased flexibility, muscle atrophy, diminished muscle strength and deformities. Under appropriate counseling, patients with rheumatoid arthritis can exercise safely, enhancing overall physical fitness, greater ease for activities of daily living and an improving in sense of well-being and self-efficacy. Aim of the study:To evaluate the impact of self-management techniques on self-efficacy among patients with rheumatoid arthritis at a university hospital in Cairo.Research hypothesis:The patients who will receive self-management techniques will show higher levels of self efficacy Research design: One-group Pre-Assessment/Post-Assessment research design (pre-experiments). Sample: A random sample of 30 adult patients with RA recruited for the current study. Setting: outpatient rheumatology clinics at El - Kasr El- Eini Hospital. Tools of data collection: a- Structured interview questionnaire b- Arthritis Self-Efficacy Tool. Results: The majority of the studied sample (80%) where female, signs and symptoms of RA (Arthralgia, Continuous fatigue, Stiffness, Unable to perform ADLs and Joint swelling) were (96.6%, 90%, 83%, 80%, 76 %) respectively. Moreover, the self-efficacy of studied sample in 1st Assessment, 2nd Assessment and 3rd Assessment were (125.37 ± 29.93, 130.23 ± 32.45, 137.06 ± 29.23) respectively. Finally, self-management techniques delivered to patients with RA which included exercises, rest, diet, application of heat and cold packs, and adherence to medications had resulted in improving self-efficacy. Conclusion:The findings of this study supported the research hypothesis as the patients who received self-management techniques showed higherstatistically difference levels of self-efficacy. Recommendation: Self-management techniques should become an integrated part of the total management of rheumatoid arthritis patient. Follow up for all RA patients to assess their health conditions and to detect early disease complications.
