Abstract Mohammed Abdelgaleel Sallam - Ahmed Ali Mohamed Elshebiny - Amin Mohammed Alansary Background: Pregnancy and the puerperium (postpartum period) are well-established risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE).Pregnancy is associated with a number of physiological and anatomic changes that can increase the risk of VTE. Virchow described a triad of initiating factors for venous thrombosis, namely hypercoagulability, venous stasis and vascular damage, all of which occur during pregnancy. Aim of the Essay: Discuss the pathophysiology and ICU management of pulmonary embolism in pregnancy, labor and postpartum period. Summary: PE can be considered in four phases: acute (first 24 h from diagnosis), subacute (day 1–30), medium term (1–6 months) and long term (beyond 6 months), with decreasing risk of recurrence and mortality from recurrent VTE with each phase. |
