Abstract

The matrix converter is a direct AC-AC converter; it performs the AC-AC power conversion in one step not via a DC-link in contrast to traditional indirect converter. The matrix converter provides a bidirectional power flow and sinusoidal input current with controllable input displacement factor.
This thesis presents a matrix converter interfaced wind energy conversion system. The matrix converter is used to control the rms value and frequency of the load voltage.The numerous advantages of using a self-excited induction generator in converting the captured mechanical energy from WT made it suitable for use in small and medium size WECS. Due to the low cost of SCIG compared to other types of electric machines make it suitable for isolated load application of WECS. SCIG also have the ability of self –protection against short circuits and does not require routine maintenance.
Types of wind turbines will be discussed with showing the advantage and disadvantage for each type, in addition to modeling wind turbine in MATLAB Simulink. This thesis introduces advantage of self-excited induction generator, its characteristics, equivalent circuit and their MATLAB model. Different types of AC-AC power converters will be introduces in this thesis, these converters are classified into two groups. First group AC Voltage Regulator which can control the rms value of voltage at constant frequency. Second one Frequency Converter which can control the rms value of voltage in addition to control the frequency, this group can be classified into two groups. The first is cycloconverter which give output frequency less than input frequency and the second one is the case under study matrix converter.
Indirect space vector modulation will be introduced, in addition to showing how to transform from indirect matrix converter to direct one. This thesis proposes
modified symmetric sequence algorithm for space vector modulation. The proposed algorithm reduces total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage. This thesis introduces the ability of matrix converter to give a wide range of output frequency, controlling the phase angle between input voltage and input current and unity input displacment factor can be achieved, In addition this thesis proposes a modified open loop control of space vector modulation for matrix converter. The modified open loop control provides a constant output voltage and constant output frequency even if wind speed changes .
Finally simulation and experimental set up results are introduced for each part in this thesis.
