Abstract
B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is lymphoid malignancy, characterized by the monoclonal expansion of B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymphoid organs. The disease has a typical clinical presentation but the clinical course is variable with survival times from 3 to 20 years. Two major staging systems (Binet and Rai) have been developed to address this clinical heterogeneity. They are based on the degree of bone marrow insufficiency (anaemia, thrombocytopenia), lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly. CD74 known as invariant chain, is a transmembrane, non polymorphic type II protein, functional in many immunological processes. The most important role of CD74 is regulation of the movement of major histocompatibility complex class II antigens in antigen-presenting cells. CD74 is directly involved in the maturation of B cells through the nuclear factor Kappa B. CD74 expression was observed in many cancers and in all cases it was reported as prognostic factor reflecting tumor progression and poor clinical prognosis. The aim of this study was to assess the expression of CD74 in cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in correlation with ZAP-70 expression. It was carried out on 25 newly diagnosed CLL patients subjects, selected from Internal medicine department, Tanta University Hospital. Another 15 healthy subjects, matched for age and sex were included as a control group. All included subjects were submitted to full history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations.
