Abstract

Geological studies of Quaternary coastal deposits can provide useful information in recognizing the landscape evolution during periods that witnessed change and sea-level variations, besides they are considered as valuable tools in palaeoenvironmental studies because: i) they have usually experienced only minor tectonic deformation, and ii) they can be precisely dated by various geochronological methods. Accurate study of these deposits can therefore give information on how the climate and sea level changed during the last 125ky.
Although that past climate data can provide a reliable guide to the future, important economic and social decisions being made today such as water resources management, coastal engineering projects, urban and energy planning, nature conservation, etc., have also considered climatic changes particularly in view of the current population explosion, increasing the utilization of coastal areas for industry, agriculture, fisheries and tourism.
