Abstract

In this work the total and the full energy peak efficiencies are calculated by using a new direct mathematical method. The thesis contains four chapters, a total of 144 references, an appendix, and an Arabic and English summaries.
The first chapter represents an introduction to gamma-rays in terms of their interaction with matter, the attenuation coefficient and the mass-energy absorption coefficient. We provide a description of the detector construction, the deposited energy and the predicted response functions for different sizes of the detector. In particular, we discuss the NaI (Tl) scintillation detector as well as the HPGe semiconductor detector taking into account the configuration and the energy resolution. At the end of this chapter, we present the aim of the work.
In the second chapter, we introduce the theoretical background of this thesis. Basically, we analyze the different types of efficiencies and discuss the various methods used to determine them. This includes experimental, empirical, semi-empirical, Monte Carlo and direct mathematical methods. In addition, the sensitivity of the detector efficiency to the shape of the source and the geometrical effect is discussed.
