Abstract

The study deals with a pragmatic analysis of Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men: implicatures of social criticism. Robert Penn Warren was an American writer and literary critic and was one of the founders of New Criticism who was born in Guthrie, Kentucky(1905). All the King’s Men was first published in 1946. It is loosely based on the biography of Louisiana governor Huey Long and derives its title from a line in the popular nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty and is also a reference to Long’s slogan ”Every Man a King”. In 1947 Warren won the Pulitzer Prize for All the King’s Men . This study consists of three chapters and a conclusion. Pragmatics is one of linguistic studies that attracts the writers to learn more about it. Pragmatics consists of several aspects including context, deictic, presupposition, implicature, and speech acts. Speech acts is a central point of pragmatics. In communication, participants use utterances in acting that is known as speech acts. Social criticism is one common way to communicate. It is easily found in many communication media. In any community, social criticism is often found in many occasions, such as speeches, poems, caricatures, songs, films etc. The present study aims to identify a pragmatic analysis of Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men. It focuses on the apparatus of pragmatic description and analysis based on the famous speech act theory. Deixis, implicature, presupposition and speech acts can be identified to explore interpretive possibilities of the intended messages behind the author’s utterances with an explanation of their significance, both from the characters’ as well as authorial viewpoints. The researcher chooses All the King’s Men because it is a political tale and is rich in social critiques. The purpose of this study is to show the occurrence of deixis, implicature and speech acts in this novel.
