Abstract The present study was aimed to show a comparative assessment and difference(s) between orally administration of two bioactive flavonoids Silymarin (Sly) and Silibinin (Slb) as hypoglycemic, antioxidant , hypolipidemic agents and the restoration and recovery of normal structure of islets of Langerhans β-cells and mitochondria in streptozotocin - diabetic rats. Streptozotocin (STZ) was injected into male rats intraperitoneally (60 mg/kg body weight) and one week after diabetic induction Sly and Slb (75 mg/kg body weight) was orally administrated for 15 days. We provided evidence, using electron microscope technique, to prove that hypoglycemic/ antidiabetic/ therapeutic actions of both Sly and Slb (by improving significantly both glucose and insulin levels), may be attributed to their stimulation of β-cells for insulin secretion via restoring antioxidant endogenous properties and hence, recovery of intact insulin secretory granules as well as restoration of normal structure of pancreatic endocrine cell islets of Langerhans. |
