Abstract Hepatitis C virus infection is a common health problem worldwide. Accurate assessment of liver fibrosis has become increasingly important in order to make therapeutic decisions, determine prognosis and to follow-up disease progression. Serum markers of liver fibrosis offer an attractive, cost effective alternative to liver biopsy for both patients and clinicians. This study was concerned with determining the levels of Collagen III antigen as direct marker for liver fibrosis staging. Collagen III antigen was identified using western blotting technique at 70 k Da. Quantification of collagen III antigen level in different stages of liver fibrosis by ELISA. The detection rate of collagen III increased with progression of liver fibrosis. Serum collagen III should be considered as a good marker for noninvasive diagnosis of liver fibrosis. |
