Abstract Of all of the mental illness that responsible for sutlering in society, schizophrenia probably causes more lengthy hospitalization, more enormous threat to lite and happiness, more chaos in family life, more exorbitant costs to patients, theit famiiies and more fear than any othet. The aim of the present study was identifYing the . impact of relapse of schizophrenia on patients’ ful1ctions and on theit families. The study was carried out at inpatient department at Tanta Mental Health 1-lospital. The sample of this study was composed of 50 schizophrenic patients who were selected according to the following criteria frequency of patient’s admission was tnore than 2 times, their age was above 25 years , both sex were involved, and duration of illness was 1 up 5 years . Also, 50 family members were involved in the sample of the stttdy who were identified as categivers fot those patients , live with the patieilts at the same home and visit them in the hospital. The sainple of the patients was divided raildomly into two groups , group of schizophrenic patieilts who relapsed three times and less as represented by (44%) and other group of schizophrenic patients who relapsed more than three times (56% ) . Questionnaire interview schedule was prepared and applied by the researcher for the purpose of data collection from both schizophrehic patients and their families. - Taylor anxiety scale was Used to assess the anxiety level of schizophrenic patients. - Results of this study revealed that, the majority of patiehts were male as revealed (78%). Major number of patients were single as represented by ( 58% ). Majority of both patients and their families came from rural .areas (66%) . Most of the patients’ caregivers were mothers (38%) . High percehtage of caregivers were illiterated as reported (68%). - There was significant difference between both groups of schizophrenic relapsed patients and their personality traits regarding decision making , problem solviqg, self esteem and selfworth . - Significant difference was found between frequency of patients’ relapse and their interaction with their families. Results showed that there were significant relationship between both groups of relapsed patients regarding work capacity and level of anxiety. Non significant difference was found between frequency of schizophrenic patients’ relapse and patients’ marital relationship .. - Significant relationship was found between frequency of patients’ relapse and neighbours as support . The commonest patients symptoms that urge caregivers to rehospitalize their patients as caregivers mentioned were aggression (64%) ahd Hallucination (40%). - Physical and psychological health condition of caregivers were affected by patients’ relapse as (40%) of them complained from both headache and anxiety. - Major number of caregivers suffered from financial problems as represented by (74%). Majority of caregivers did not consider their neighbours as support for them (68%) . - Non significant relationship was found between frequency of patients’ relapse and their caregivers’ feeling regarding grief and anger. - Results revealed that there was significant difference between caregivers’ knowledge regarding nature of disease and symptoms of relapse and frequency of schizophrenic patients’ relapse. - Problem in marriage was considered the commonest source of distress for both patients and their families as represented by (62%, 60% ) respectively. This study revealed that there is an urgent need to provide social skills training programs and work . opportunities for patients and psychoeducational programs for patients’ families. |
