Abstract The number of overweight and obese subjects is taking onalarming proportions worldwide. Obesity is a multifactorialdisease that involves an alteration of energy balance. Insulin resistance is associated with obesity and is a central componentof type 2 diabetes, leading to altered glucose and lipidmetabolism in adipose tissue, liver, and skeletal muscles. Apelin is an adipose-tissuederived hormone that is involved incarbohydrate metabolism control. It isa circulating peptide expressed in different tissues but also produced and secreted by human adipocytes, apelin production in adipose tissue is strongly upregulated by insulin, and plasma concentrations are increased in obese and hyperinsulinemic humans. |
