Abstract

This study explores verbatim theatre– a sub-genre of documentary theatre–in terms of its capacity for giving voice to Muslims within the context of the War on Terror.Little research had been conducted to explore this rich and powerful theatrical form, in which the identity of Muslims and Arabs is a recurrent theme. The study attempts to trace the emergence and the history of verbatim theatre, to explore its methodologies and innovative technical aspects,and to provide a thorough analysis of two verbatim plays concerned with giving voice to Muslims: Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom by Gillian Slovo and Victoria Brittain, and The Meaning of Waiting by Victoria Brittain. Drawing upon Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism,and his advocating of non-coercive contact between Muslims and the West as the only possible solution for their ongoing conflicts, the study proposes that verbatim theatre can be considered as a mode which promotes mutual understanding.The distinguishing quality of verbatim theatre is its ardent commitment to using the actual words of the real characters; therefore,it provides an alternative point of view that counters the official one. By examining the main themes of the two plays, the study aims to demonstrate the capacity of verbatim theatre to encompass a wide scope of ideas. Not only are such ideas valuable in refuting some official records, but also in demythologizing Muslims and depicting them as human beings, thereby urging the audience to view the injustice inherent in denying their human rights. The study also tackles some of the main problem areas concerning the form, such as the testimonies’ susceptibility to manipulation, and the question of creativity.
