Abstract

In the present work, the investigated glass system of composition (65-x)
B2O3 -10Na2O-10Al2O3-10ZnO-5Li2O-xBaO where (0 ≤ x ≤ 40 mol. %) was
prepared as gamma radiation shield. The radiation shielding properties were
carried out with a (232Th and 137Cs) radioactive sources in the energy range
(238 to 2614 Kev) by using a 2″x 2″ NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. The
obtained results were compared with the corresponding theoretical
calculations which were evaluated using WinXCom program (version 3.1).
The shielding properties were increased with the increase of BaO content.
Moreover, the experimental work includes the study of some related physical
properties of the prepared samples. XRD measurements were performed, using
Philips X-ray diffractometer PW/1710 with Cu-Kα radiation with angle 2ϴ
ranging from 10 to 80 degrees. Densities of the samples were measured by using
Archimedes principle with toluene as immersion liquid and the molar volume was
estimated. The mechanical properties such as hardness (Hv) was measured by
using a micro hardness tester (Leco AMH 100, USA) for sample indentation.
The optical spectra were measured by UV-VIS spectrophotometer in the
range of (200–1100 nm) to ensure the transparency of the samples and the glass
structural units were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
in the range of (4000–400 cm -1).The obtained results illustrated that the present
investigated glass system is an appropriate choice for radiation shielding purposes.
