Abstract

ii Composite materials have been developed more rapidly than metals in <structural applications. They are used alternatively instead of metallic materials because of their low density, high strength and rigidity.
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are advanced composite materials
consist of two or more constituents with a controlled compositional gradient
in one or two directions of the structure. The idea of FGMs enables tailoring
the mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of materials by comprising
different properties.
The present work aims at introducing a new proposed functionally graded
technique to produce new and robust functionally graded fiber reinforced
polymer-matrix composites.
The proposed new technique was applied to fabricate unidirectional
glass fib er/epoxy innovative functionally graded composite laminates with
total fib er volume fraction of 39.9% and 6 mm thickness by changing the
ply fib er volume fraction across the thickness through varying the normal
distance between adjacent fib er bundles during the fabrication process. The
mechanical characteristics (tensile, flexural, in-plane shear, flexural fatigue
and impact) of the fabricated FG composites were obtained experimentally.
The effect of the layer stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of the
fabricated FG was investigated and discussed.
