Abstract

This study was carried out at the experimental farm of Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Agriculture. Al-Azhir University. Assuit branch, Egypt. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of injection of selenium with Vitamin E on the productive and reproductive performance of ewes and their lambs. Sixteen healthy mature local ewes were divided randomly into four groups (four in each), according to their average live body weight, Frist group of animals were kept as control, group two animals were injected intramuscular with 1ml Vitsel /head/weekly (commercial product), group three animals were injected intramuscular with 1.5 ml Vitesel /head /weekly and group four animals were injected intramuscular with 2ml Vitesel /head /weekly. All ewes treated with product Vitasel before four week on estrus and during pregnancy with Vitesel. Each 1ml of Vitesel contains 68 mg Vitamin E as di –alpha-tocopheryl acetate and 1.5 mg Se, as potassium selenite. Ewes in all treatments were fed 60% of their requirements as concentrate mixture while roughage was given ad libitum. The reproductive performance of ewes such as estrous behavior, service period per conception, conception period, conception rate, abortion rate and lambing rate were determined. Also the productive performance of ewes like milk yield, number of lambs born, nursed or weaned lambs per ewe, birth type (male or female ) , lambs birth weight and lambs mortality were recorded for experimental groups . Lambs were weighted every two week of birth till weaning. Blood sample were collected from each ewe before gestation, during gestation and lastly after lambing. The blood plasma total protein, albumin, glucose, cholesterol, AST and ALT, selenium, Vitamin E, total antioxidants capacity and progesterone were determined.
