Abstract I In recent years the quality of service delivery has become anr important focus of attention for every one employed in health care. Quality is not just an abstracted concept, it means mJeting agreed requirements, formal and informal at lower co t, at first time and every time (Roberston, 1994 and Beckford, 1998). Measurement of quality is becoming a comer ·. I . stQne in the nursing quality improvement program. Workers mhst measure it, not the top managers as recommended by Daft I (1991). / .: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship b tween job satisfaction and quality of nursing performance th ough (a) estimating job satisfaction level of staff nurses, (b) a sessing quality of patient care delivered by the included I . nurses in the study. i The subjects of these study was the 88 nurses who were ptadicing at El Demerdash Hospital in the selected units and meeting the criteria of having not less than one year of experience and 254 patients who meeting criteria of hbspjtalization not less than 3 days. The study tools for data collection were (a) nurses’ job satisfaction questionnaire, (b) pktients’ satisfaction questionnaire and (c) observation ’ . checklist. All the three tools developed by the investigators and tdsted for validity before using. Data was collected from F;ebruary the first to the end of June 2001. A pilot study was done before the data collection. - Results of the study indicated low quality of nursing care and nurses seemed to be satisfied. - The hypothesis of the study was rejected since there was no, relationship found between job satisfaction and quality of their performance. - Type of departments was found to affect the nurses’ satisfaction. - The study data revealed that nurses using functional method were more satisfied than nurses using case method, while the performance of the case method nurses was better than functional method nurses. - Data revealed that nurses working on morning shift were more satisfied than afternoon shift nurses. - The study data elicit that patients with short hospital stay were more satisfied than patients with long hospital stay. - Data shows that there is increase of the satisfaction with the increase frequency of admission. The hypothesis of the study was assumed that the quality of nursing performance of the satisfied nurse will be better than quality of nursing performance of the dissatisfaction nurse. This hypothesis was rejected by the study which concluded that there was negative relationship between nurses job satisfaction and the quality of their performance. 1.
