Abstract

Hip fracture is often a catastrophic event that carries an overwhelming threat to an individual’s independence and ability to live in the community. Also it is considered one of the most fatal fractures for elderly women, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality and impaired functional capacity, particularly for basic and instrumental activities of daily living. It is considered a dangerous problem that requires hospitalization and surgery. The ultimate goal of caring for elderly women with hip fractures is to help them regain their pre-fracture level of independence as much as possible.
The aim of this study is to assess functional outcomes following hip fracture in elderly women in Aswan Governorate.
Design: The study followed a descriptive correlational design.
Setting: The study was conducted in the orthopedic inpatient unit in Aswan University hospital.
Subjects: The study subjects comprised all elderly women suffering from hip fracture admitted to the previous setting during a three months period. The inclusion criteria were:-
Females aged 60 years and above, independent in activities of daily living (ADLs) before the fracture, women with non-pathological femoral neck or trochanteric hip fracture for the first time, normal cognitive function, and accept to participate in the study. Their number amounted to 60 elderly women.
