Abstract

The study was carried to evaluate the effect of Retention Sil versus ball and socket attachment on the supporting structures of implant retained overdentures.
Fourteen patients were selected from among those attending the out-patient clinic, Prosthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University to participate in this study. Patients were precisely selected, and thoroughly examined in an attempt to reduce human variables and eliminate any factor that might adversely affect the results of this study. Each patient was received two mandibular implants placed in the interforaminal region.
Patients were rehabilitated by mucosa supported maxillary complete denture and implant retained mandibular overdenture. Standard clinical and laboratory techniques were followed for denture construction for all patients. Patients participating in this study were randomly divided into two equal groups.
group I: Patients were rehabilitated with lower implant retained overdenture relined with ”Retention Sil” soft liner.
group II: Patients were rehabilitated with lower implant retained overdenture with ball and socket attachment.
Surgical installation of the implants was performed under strict aseptic conditions and immediate loading protocol was followed.
Patients were recalled frequently for post-insertion inspection and adjustments. Follow-up visits were scheduled at the time of denture, six, twelve months after overdenture insertion for inspection of the prosthesis and collection of the data (radiographic evaluation) by the digital panoramic radiograph.
Results obtained from this study showed:
- Statistically significant decrease in peri-implant hone height for both studied groups within the acceptable range of implant success rule
- group I (Retention Sil) patients showed statistically significant less amount of peri-implant bone height changes than group II (Ball and socket) within twelve months follow-up period.
