Abstract

MGB is shorter, easier, less expensive and has lower risk bariatric surgery procedure.
In our study we evaluated the reflux before and after LMGB over a 18-month period for 40 cases for each performed in Ain Shams University hospitals. (12 males and 28 females), Mean age (41.0± 10.37 years), mean weight (157.13± 22.55 kg) and mean BMI (47.28 ± 5.70) kg/m2.
All procedures were completed laparoscopically. Mean operative time was (106.98 ± 30.81) minutes, and mean hospital stay was (4.8 ± 2.09) days. 3 complications (7.5%), preoperative reflux were noted in 6 patients (15%) and post operative reflux were noted in other 5 patients (12.5%) during follow-up.
Ambulatory 24-hr esophageal pH monitoring was used for the diagnosis of GERD.
There are 6 cases (15%) presented by GERD preoperative, 4 cases improved early postoperative, 1 case improved after 3rd month and other 1 case improved at 6th month. And 5 cases (12.5%) presented by GERD postperative, 3 cases improved at 3rd month and other 2 cases improved at 6th month. The majority of preoperative reflux disappeared early postoperative and the postoperative reflux did not excessed the 6th month.
The mean reflux of all studied cases by DeMeester Score 14.3  15.1, 6 of patients (15%) had acid reflux before surgery, 7 patients (17.5%) had acid reflux early post operative, 3 patients (7.5%) had acid reflux 3 months postoperatively and None of the patients undergoing surgery are having acid reflux 6 months post operatively.
MGB is associated with an acceptable operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and perioperative morbidity, with no mortality. The mean Excess body weight loss % at 3, 6 and 12 months was (33.36 ± 9.54) %, (51.72 ± 10.85) % and (68.37 ± 12.97) %.) respectively.
