Abstract

Comparison of furrow and drip-irrigated pods of snap bean showed that both pod types were differed in the biochemical concentrations and histological parameters. Non-treatedfurrow-irrigated pods were better for storage for 25 days at 7±1°C and 85% RH, whereas showed lower percentage of decay, rot, soggy but more water loss compared to drip-irrigated ones during all periods of storage. Salicylic acid at 200 ppm was the suitable treatment to preserve the highest concentrations of chlorophyll b, total chlorophylls, carotenoids and the lowest percentage of fruit decay, rotting , chilling injuries, free phenolics and free amino acids as well as activity of superoxide dismutase compared to control and other treatments under study at all storage periods, which correlated with the maximum thickness of epidermis with cuticle, vascular bundle at maximum radius, symmetric of cells and non-lysigenous of cells in pericarp in drip-irrigated pods. Gibberellic acid at 2 mM was the proper treatment to preserve the highest concentrations of chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophylls and the lowest percentage of fruit decay, rotting , chilling injuries which contributed with the lowest activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase as well as non-lysigenous of cells in pericarp in furrow-irrigated pods compared to non-treated fruits and other investigated treatments.
