Abstract
Obesity is an important public health issue not only in the general population but also among pregnant women. Maternal obesity is associated with potent risks and complications for both mother and the fetus.
This case control study was applied to 240 pregnant women at the time of delivery attending Dar Esmael Maternity Hospital. They were divided into two groups. The first group (cases) included 120 obese pregnant women with BMI of 30-40 kg/m2. The second control group included 120 normal weight pregnant women with BMI of 20-25 kg/m2. The study lasted for 9 months.
Our results showed that:
- Age of women ranged between 21-34 years with the mean of 26.08±3.49 for the obese group and ranged between 20-35 years with the mean of 24.98±3.14 y for the non obese groups. There was no statistical significant difference between the two groups.
- BMI ranged between 30.52-40.0 kg/m2 with the mean of 35.11±2.25 for the obese group and ranged between 20.0-25.0 kg/m2 with the mean of 22.70±1.59 for the non obese group. Obese group had values statistically higher than non obese group.(p=0.0001)
- Fasting Blood Sugar ranged between 72-123 mg/dl with the mean of 93.219.85 for obese group and ranged between 64-106 mg/dl with the mean of 88.2510.71 for the non obese group. Obese group had values statistically higher than non obese group. (P=0.0001).
- Expected Fetal Weight ranged between 3.25-4.8 kg with the mean of 3.890.28 for obese group and ranged between 3.21-4.3 kg with the mean of 3.620.29 for the non obese groups. There was statistical significant difference between the two studied groups regarding expected fetal weight. (p=0.021)
- Birth weight ranged between 3.36 -5.6 kg with the mean of 3.920.31 for the obese group and ranged between 3.38-4.1 kg with the mean of 3.610.26 for the non obese group. Obese group had values of birth weight statistically higher than non obese group. (P=0.0041).
- There was no significant difference between the expected fetal weight and actual birth weight
- Regarding maternal postpartum complications, all complications were found in obese group only, haemorrhage was found in 2 (1.7%), vaginal tears were found in 2 (1.7%),and blood transfusion was found in 2 (1.7%) of obese group only. On the other hand, the non obese women had no postpartum complications.
- Regarding neonatal complications, admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was found in 8 (6.7%) and 2 (1.7%), nasal oxygen administration was found in 5 (4.2%) and 5 (4.2%) for obese and non obese groups respectively. There was statistical significant difference between the two studied groups regarding admission to the NICU. (p=0.18).
