Abstract

The present study investigated the effectiveness of a computer-based games program for developing vocabulary learning as well as risk-taking among primary stage pupils. The participants were 60 fourth year primary stage pupils. They were divided into two groups: control group and experimental group. The experimental group was exposed to computer-based games in learning vocabulary, whereas the control group was taught by the conventional way. Two instruments were used: a vocabulary achievement test and a risk-taking scale. Results of the study indicated that the experimental group pupils outperformed their counterparts in the control group on the vocabulary achievement post-course administration test and on the risk-taking post-course administration scale. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-course administration results of the experimental group in both the vocabulary achievement test and risk-taking scale in favor of the post-course administration. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the computer-based games program was effective in developing the fourth year primary stage pupils’ vocabulary and primary stage pupilsrisk-taking.
