Abstract This study was carried out to analyze the characteristics of the smile in the Egyptian population using standardized photographic records. A sample of two hundred Egyptian subjects was equally divided into one hundred males and one hundred females with age range from 18-23 years. For each a frontal extra-oral photo at rest, with posed smile, an oblique extra-oral photo with posed smile, and a frontal intra-oral photo were taken. Each frontal extra-oral photo with posed smile was used to define the different smile characteristics (smile arc, smile line height, relation of the dental midline to the facial midline, symmetry of the smile, smile index, buccal corridor percentage). The oblique extraoral photos with posed smile were used to help identifying the smile arc and the smile height. The frontal intra-oral photographs were used to quantify the tooth proportionality. The data collected from the smile photographs were tabulated and statistically analyzed. |
