Abstract Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy during substrate oxidation with the aid of microorganisms that act as biocatalysts. The energy contained in organic matter is converted to useful electrical power. An MFC operates as electrons from the microorganisms transfer from a reduced electron donor to an electron acceptor at a higher electrochemical potential. The aims of the study are to determine the most efficient wastewater source in sugar cane industry that can generate the highest rate of electricity production by using MFCs and to determine the removal rate of chemical oxygen demand in wastewater by using MFCs. The two different wastewater samples used were wastewater of sugarcane industry and distillery wastewater from sugar cane. The highest rate of voltage generation is achieved when the MFC was operated with distillery wastewater (0.74 V), while wastewater of sugarcane (0.36V). However, based on the study of the graph pattern generated, distillery wastewater with its pH (5.6:6.5) provided the most consistent record in terms of electricity generation. The highest efficiency of COD removal is achieved by distillery wastewater (88 %), followed by wastewater of sugarcane (18.47 %). The pH (5.6 to 6.5) of wastewater is the suitable pH without any adjusting because the microorganism adapting in its. Additionally, improvement in microbial fuel cell were done to increase production of electricity, using different materials of anode like carbon felt that increased power density from 55mW/m² for carbon cloth to 265mW/m² carbon felt and to 1400mW/m² for carbon felt with nitrogen doped graphene with cobalt, and when use graphene with carbon cloth by electrophoretic method and cambered it with carbon cloth, the power density increased from 18mW/m² to 25mW/m².and when using carbon felt with tungsten carbide the power density 400mW/m² compared with carbon felt 252mW/m². Furthermore, the modification in cathode materials to replace the palatine as a catalyst with another materials as it is very expensive material and don’t use in large scale so, using carbon cloth with tungsten nitride that produced 134mW/m² compared with 79mW/m² for carbon cloth with palatine, Using of carbon cloth with Nano fiber that produced 82mW/m². With these result it can replace palatine with other materials. Moreover ,the maximum power achieved by stacking of microbial fuel cell in series or parallel , so in this work ,two and three microbial fuel cell connected in series and the results in sequence 140,372mW/m. |
