Abstract

First, as the speaker used words and sentences to convey information, the referential function of language appears. In addition, this speech succeeded in moving the hearts of the whole world towards the Libyan people as a lot of information in this speech led to a behavior as its final result. In this speech, Obama concentrated more on conveying information than on sending messages, so he concentrated more on the referential function of language than on the poetic one. There is an inverse correlation between the referential function and the poetic one. ”The more the message talks about itself and refers to itself (the poetic function), the less it talks about the context and refers to it (the referential function) and vice versa (Hebert, 2011, p.9).”
