Abstract

Objectives: To compare the efficacy of carbetocin and oxytocin in the prevention of post-partum hemorrhage in patients undergoing elective CS with a high risk of post-partum hemorrhage.
Methods: 264 pregnant high risk women for primary postpartum hemorrhage undergoing elective caesarean section; 133 women received 100 µg of carbetocin IV and 131 women received 5 IU oxytocin IV. Uterine tone and need for another uterotonic agents togather with the amount of maternal blood loass were the main parameters evaluated.
Results: carbetocin shows significant difference in uterine tone, the need for additional uterotonic, the amount of maternal blood loss and the need for blood transfusion with a good safety profile as oxytocin.
Conclusion: Compared with oxytocin, prophylaxis of uterine atony with carbetocin after an elective cesarean section reduces the amount of maternal blood loss by 5-fold with good safety profile and lesser adverse effects.
Key words: postpartum hemorrhage, uterotonic drugs, carbetocin, oxytocin, uterine atony, caesarean section.
