Abstract

The burden of childhood asthma has increased in recent years. It causes a strong emotional impact, associated with school absenteeism, social constraints, stress, affective disorders, depression, insomnia, and negative social perceptions. In addition, it is a stressful condition not only for the child but also for parents. The present study aimed to assess QoL of children with bronchial asthma and their caregivers, and to explore factors associated with QoL of these children. The study recruited 171 children in aging 7 -17 years. They were submitted to careful history taking and thorough clinical examination. QoLwas assessed using Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) and Pediatric Asthma Caregivers Quality of Life Questionnaire (PACQLQ). The studied children comprised 87 males (50.9 %) and 84 females (49.1 %). There were 52 underweight children (30.4 %) while there were 29 overweight and obese children (17.0 %) and the remainder 90 children (52.6 %) had normal weight. Residence was almost equally distributed between urban and rural areas (52.0 % vs 48.0 %). Also, most patients belonged the middle socioeconomic class (56.1 %).
Appropriate control of asthma symptoms was achieved in 93 patients (54.4 %) while 78 patients (45.6 %) had uncontrolled disease. In this study, there were no statistically significant differences between children with different BMI categories regarding QoL total and domain scores. However, we noted a significantly lower total and domain PAQLQ scores in children with low and very low SES. In addition, patients with controlled asthma had significantly better total and domain asthma scores. Also, patients with severe asthma had significantly worse total and categorical PAQLQ score.
In the current study, parents of older children had significantly better quality of life when compared with younger children. Also, there was a significant deterioration in their QoL with increased asthma severity. Also, total PAQoLQ and PACQoLQ were better with patient’s education about the disease and its management.
