Abstract Prolactin (PRL) is a peptide hormone and is one of several hormones that are produced by the pituitary gland. PRL plays an essential role in metabolism, regulation of the immune system and pancreatic development. Unusually high amounts of PRL (Hyperprolactinemia, HPRL) are suspected to be responsible for impotence and loss of libido and decrease the levels of sex hormones (estrogen in women and testosterone in men). HPRL is the most common endocrine disorder of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Many drugs, medical herbs and heavy metals can be elevated serum PRL levels. HPRL may also be the result of disease of other organs such as the liver, kidneys, ovaries and thyroid. |
