Abstract

Introduction: Account on nosocomial infections, nosocomial pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia in addition to methods of prevention, one of which is oral hygiene. Aim of the work: we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral hygiene for decreasing the incidence of nosocomial pneumonia among pediatric ICU patients. Study Plan: The present study is a case-control study applied to children admitted to PICU at MUCH to undergo oral hygiene protocol by tooth brushing and chlorhexidine mouthwash according to age. Results : show reduction of VAP among pediatric ICU patients. Also, duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay were greatly reduced with moderate decrease of mortality. VAP is associated with young age with no affection of gender on it. Summary and conclusion: Significant difference in development of VAP. High significant difference in the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of stay in ICU in patients with oral hygiene versus those without. A statistically non-significant difference regarding the impact on mortality in patients with oral hygiene compared to patients with without. Gender had no effect on VAP occurrence. Implementation of regular protocolized oral hygiene among mechanically ventilated children in the PICU using CHX 0.12% was associated with a positive impact on reduction of incidence of VAP, duration of MV, LOS and mortality.
