Abstract

The present study was conducted in two experiment, the first experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of partial substituting diet constituents by dried Egyptian leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. kurrat) leaves powder as unconventional feedstuff in the diet of broiler chickens and its effect on the growth performance, some serum biochemical parameters and carcass characteristics. Results from this first experiment revealed that the dietary treatments with (4, 6, 8 and 10%) levels of leek had significant effect (P<0.05) on growth performance parameters than those fed the control diet and other group. The broilers fed diet contained 8% leek had significant heavier final body weight, body gain and best feed conversion ratio as compared to broiler chickens fed other dietary treatments. Some serum biochemical parameters were significantly (P<0.05) improved due to partial substitution of diet constituents with leek, as there was decrease in total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level and glucose level and an increase in HDL level was observed. Weight percentages weight of liver, heart, stomach and spleen had no significant (P>0.05) change effected by broilers fed on different levels of leek, while there was significant (P<0.05) increase in the weight percentage of dressing as compared to those fed control group. The second experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with Egyptian leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. kurrat) leaves extract in the diets and drinking water of broiler chickens and its effect on the growth performance, some serum biochemical parameters and carcass characteristics. Results from this second experiment revealed that the dietary treatments with (0.1% in diet, 0.2% in diet, 0.1% in drink water and 0.2% in drink water) level of leek leaves extract had significant effect (P<0.05) on growth performance parameters than those fed the control diet. The broilers fed diet contained 0.2% leek leaves extract in broiler diet had significant heavier final body weight, body weight gain and best feed conversion ratio as compared to broiler chickens fed other dietary treatments. Some serum biochemical parameters were significantly (P<0.05) improved due to addition leek leaves extract in diet or in drinking water as it decrease the total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level and glucose level and incontrast it increase HDL level. Weight percentages of liver, heart, stomach and spleen had no significant (P>0.05) effected by broilers fed on different levels of leek extract while, there was significant (P<0.05) increase in the weight percentage of dressing as compared to those fed control group.
