Abstract

The main objective of this report is to study the seismic behavior of irregular structures provided with different lateral load resisting systems. These systems were shear walls, coupled shear walls and dual system consisted of frame and shear wall. All the studied cases were compared with the regular cases and the code inter-story drift limits of the Egyptian code 2012 (ECP-201) were used to obtain the required sections using the Response Spectrum Analysis Method (Multi-modal Response Spectrum method). The study building model was considered in this report a typical symmetrical plan contains three different irregularities cases: 1. Case (1): irregular shear wall In this case the wall width was changed ones at point (y/H) while the length was kept constant to obtain the minimum concrete volume of wall, also the length of wall was changed ones at point (y/H) while the width was kept constant to obtain the minimum concrete volume of wall. 2. Coupled shear walls system A regular coupled shear wall was used to resist seismic forces to study the effect of coupling beam on reducing concrete volume of coupled shear walls comparing with regular shear wall. For irregular coupled shear walls, the width was changed ones at point (y/H) while the length was kept constant to obtain the minimum concrete volume of coupled shear wall. 3. Dual system A dual system consisted of frame and shear wall which was used to resist seismic forces to study the effect wall stiffness on concrete volume. For case of using shear wall not extending to the end of building with complete rigid frame to obtain the optimum point of ending wall with increasing its section to fulfill the Egyptian code limit for inter-story drift and obtain minimum volume of dual system. Based on the studied variables the following.
