Abstract According to our knowledge, there are little studies evaluating the correlation between cognitive impairment and patients with non complicated, untreated viral hepatitis. We think, our study group reflects the population of Upper Egypt because of the variability of the patients attending to our hospital from the various parts of Upper Egypt. The study included 40 patients who were coming in Tropical medicine outpatient clinic at Sohag University Hospital between March 2015 and March 2016 were screened for this study. These numbers of patients were divided as following: group (a) 20 patients having the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C infection, group (b) 20 patients having the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis B infection and a group of 40 controlled healthy individuals with similar demographic features presenting to the primary care clinic for a routine check-up examination without any diagnosed illness or treatment forming group (C). To conclude, chronic hepatitis C patients with mild or no liver affection exhibit symptoms of fatigue, depression/anxiety and impaired quality of life. They also show evidence of cognitive impairment, neurophysiological disturbance in HCV infection. These results could therefore indicate a direct or indirect action of the HCV on the brain. We also cannot exclude the possibility of residual confounding by unmeasured determinants, for example environmental factors, diet or physical activity. We concluded that clinicians should be aware of the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with chronic HCV infection. Recommendations - We recommend that the exact role HCV in causing cognitive dysfunction patient with mild or no liver affection should be investigated by larger studies. - We recommend that further studies are now needed to clarify the pathophysiology of cerebral dysfunction in HVC group. - We recommend that our result in patients with HBV infection must be evaluated and investigated in more and larger studies. - We recommend that the impact of HCV infection on public health in Egypt must be investigated with larger studies. |
