Abstract

This thesis analyzes Mildred Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, and Beverley Naidoo’s The Other Side of Truth from a multicultural perspective. The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the strategies that Taylor and Naidoo used in their novels to subvert the negative stereotypical images of Black people, which were rampant in classic children’s literature, and reveal their purposes of this subversion. Both writers use the same themes, such as the values of Black family, importance of education for Blacks, child’s agency, racism, and hope, as strategies to represent the positive traits of Black people. However, the thesis develops the criteria of evaluating the high quality multicultural literature based on the works of Junko Yokota (1993), Mingshui Cai (2002), and Denise Agosto (2007). Based on the analysis, it is appropriate to consider the extracted strategies as criteria for writing excellent multicultural books. They could be seen as a route to the multicultural writers and authors throughout the world to represent positive portrayal for minority groups in the future and create qualified multicultural texts as Taylor and Naidoo do. Following and applying these strategies could help the audience in understanding, accepting and respecting diversity, and contribute to the creation of global interconnectedness.
