Abstract

Critical discourse analysis appears to be of great importance in English and in some languages as well. It deals with language issues, ideology and power in the discourse of texts. This thesis deals with a critical discourse analysis of three modern American political novels: All the King’s Men, The People’s Choice, and The President Vanishes. This analysis is considered as critical because it aims at discovering implicit ideologies whether they are political or social in the novels under analysis. This study aims at discovering the way in which novelists use language to persuade their readers through creating some political characters in their novels. It also attempts to state how politicians in the novels can manipulate language for the purpose of serving their go This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the problem of the study, its significance, its aims, research questions, limitation of the study, and chapterization. Chapter two handles the term critical discourse analysis, ideology and political discourse, literary discourse, power and dominance, production of discourse and enactment of power, superstructures, rhetorical devices and persuasive tools. Chapter three provides some information about the three novels under study and their authors. It also deals with the study design, the study methods and procedure, data collection, procedures, and data analysis. Chapter four deals with data analysis through using some rhetorical devices and persuasive tools Finally, chapter five deals with conclusions and recommendations of the study. It can be concluded that all the persuasive tools of this study are available in the three novels under discussion, but they are used differently, and their availability differs from one novel to another.
