Abstract

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a complex congenital anomaly that consists of incomplete formation of the diaphragm coupled with herniation of the abdominal viscera into the chest that results in some degree of pulmonary hypoplasia in the ipsilateral lung and to a lesser extent in the contralateral lung. Bochdalek hernia is the most common hernia type of CDH (95%), while Morgagni hernia has an incidence of about 2%. Bochdalek hernias usually present immediately after birth with respiratory distress while late-presenting hernias represent about 5-20% of cases and are characterized by mild-to-moderate symptoms with a relatively stable general condition. Morgagni hernias are usually diagnosed late due to non-specific nature of symptoms with very few cases detected and managed in the neonatal period.
