Abstract

A total of 280 quarter milk samples of clinically healthy dairy cows and 216 quarter milk samples of clinically healthy dairy buffaloes in Dakahlia Governorate were collected and examined using California mastitis test (CMT) to detect subclinical mastitis (SCM). Only 84 samples (30%) were positive for cows and 56 samples (26%) were positive for buffaloes. Somatic Cell count (SCC), milk enzymes activities; lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bacteriological examination were applied to positive CMT only. The SCM milk sample showed elevation in SCC, LDH and ALP activities. The correlation between bacterial infections, Somatic Cell count and enzymatic activities in subclinical mastitis milk revealed that the mixed bacterial infections showed higher elevation in SCC as well as enzymes activities than single bacterial infections. In conclusion, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities in milk sample can be used as biomarkers combined with Somatic Cell count (SCC) for early detection of bovine subclinical mastitis.
